How to Look Confident in your headshots

Let’s be real—most people don’t love being in front of a camera. In fact, when someone says, “I’m super photogenic,” I immediately know they’re lying or they’ve been in front of the lens way too much. For the rest of us mortals, a headshot session can feel like a root canal, but with nicer lighting.

The good news? You can look confident without actually feeling it. I’ve seen it happen hundreds of times in my studio. Here’s how to fake it like a pro:

1. The “Half-Smile” Magic Trick

Forget the cheesy “say cheese” grin. A small, relaxed smile works better because it doesn’t make your cheeks ache, and it gives you that approachable-but-professional vibe. Think “I just heard a mildly amusing joke”.

2. Own Your Space

People tend to shrink when they’re nervous—rounded shoulders, chin tucked in like a turtle. Instead, plant your feet shoulder-width apart, straighten your spine, and imagine a string gently pulling the top of your head up. You’re not just taking up space; you’re claiming it.

3. The Power of a Slow Breath

Before the shutter clicks, inhale slowly through your nose and exhale through your mouth. It lowers your heart rate and relaxes your jaw (goodbye, awkward tension face).

4. Use the “Chin Forward, Down” Trick

It feels weird, but it works. Pushing your chin slightly forward and lowering it a touch sharpens your jawline and makes you look more engaged.

5. Think Confident Thoughts (Even If They’re Ridiculous)

Confidence shows in your eyes more than anywhere else. So before each shot, think about something that makes you feel powerful—landing a big client, nailing a presentation, or finally assembling IKEA furniture without crying.

Bottom line: Confidence isn’t about erasing nerves; it’s about redirecting them. With a few simple tricks, you can look calm, capable, and in control—even if your inner monologue is just, “Don’t blink. Don’t blink. Don’t blink.”
