What Should I Wear for My Headshots?

You've booked your session. You know where to go and when to show up. But then comes the question that trips up almost everyone: "What do I actually wear?"

It sounds simple. It's not. Your outfit is one of the biggest factors in how your headshot turns out and making the wrong call can undermine an otherwise great photo. The good news? A few basic guidelines go a long way.

Start With Fit (Seriously, This Is Everything)

Before we even get to color or style, fit is the most important thing. A well fitted outfit always photographs better than an expensive one that doesn't sit right. Clothes that are too baggy can make you look shapeless. Too tight, and you'll be uncomfortable and that shows up on camera.

If there's something in your closet that you always feel good in, that's your starting point.

Colors That Work and Colors That Don't

Solid, mid tone colors tend to be the sweet spot for headshots. Think navy, forest green, slate blue, charcoal, or a warm camel. These colors complement most skin tones and keep the focus where it belongs on your face. Black is classic, just make sure you choose the right background to go with it.

Colors to be cautious with: bright white (it can blow out in the light), neon or very saturated tones (they can cast color onto your skin), and black on black (tends to flatten out and lose definition).

That said, rules are made to be broken. A pop of color in the right shade can look fantastic. Just be intentional about it.

Patterns: Proceed With Caution

Small, busy patterns, thin stripes, fine checks, herringbone can work and add some texture. Large, bold patterns can also pull attention away from your face.

If you love a patterned piece, go for something with a simpler print and see how it reads during the session. Maybe bring a solid as a backup.

Dress for Your Industry (But Make It You)

Think about where this headshot is going to live. A Boston tech founder on a startup website has a different vibe than a financial advisor updating their LinkedIn. You don't need to be in a suit if that's not how you show up to work but you also don't want to look underdressed for the role you're going for.

A good rule of thumb: dress one step above your everyday work look. If you typically wear business casual, lean a little more polished. If you're in a creative field, let your personal style come through.

Bring Options: More Than You Think You Need

Most people bring one or two outfits and wish they'd brought more. Three to four is ideal. Different necklines, a mix of casual and more formal, maybe a jacket or blazer you can add or remove. Having choices gives you flexibility in the moment.

Don’t worry about bringing a lint roller. We’ve got you covered.

A few quick don'ts: avoid logos or graphics (they date the photo), skip heavy or distracting jewelry, and don't wear something brand new that you haven't broken in you want to feel comfortable, not stiff.

The Bottom Line

Your headshot should look like you, just a really polished, confident version of you. When in doubt, go with what makes you feel good. Confidence reads on camera more than any outfit ever will.

Still not sure what to wear? Reach out before your session and I'm happy to talk it through. It's one of the most common questions I get, and a quick conversation can save you a lot of wardrobe stress on shoot day.
